The Historic 1937 Steiner Log Church

Welcome to the Historic 1937 Steiner Log Church!

“Oregon’s Newest Historical Destination”

During the years of 1925 through 1952, Henry Steiner, along with his sons John and Fred, built 100 log cabins and two log churches in the forests at the base of majestic Mt. Hood. Not your typical log structures, instead each was built entirely by hand using only logs, branches, river stones, and other materials all gleaned from the forest surrounding each building site, with many pieces chosen for perhaps a quirky bent shape, a fancy burl, an oddly split trunk, or other whimsical characteristic. As a result, every log cabin and church Henry Steiner built was filled with unique hand-crafted architectural features and details, all of which gave them their signature “Steiner” look. Today, only 35 cabins still exist, and each of these is now a highly prized story element in Oregon’s rich history.

Sadly, of the two “Steiner Churches” built, only one remains today, and that is the beautiful 1937 Steiner Log Church.

While the church no longer holds services, after 46 years of painstaking and meticulous restoration work by the church’s owner, Mike Gudge, as well as John Steiner, Henry’s son, this one-of-a-kind Oregon historical treasure is now open to the public for tours and events.
